The plants are meant to be planted in the ground. If you want to grow in a container, you can but they are best in the ground. It is a perennial shrub, that will come back every year.
Yes, Bottlebrush is a deciduous shrub, so in the fall they will turn colors and then fall off.
Unless you are located in the very southern part of Maine, they are not in your planting zone. The Bottlebrush we have will grow in zones 5-9. I am not sure if there are other varieties that will work in your zone
Moist, acidic soils - good drainage is imperative.
Little pruning is required - prune after flowering if desired. Avoid cutting into thick stems unless removing them entirely, as recovery will be slow.
Though tolerant of shade, flowering and fall color are best with at least some sun each day. Plant where its fragrance can be enjoyed.
